Dr Ioannis Hatzianestis , B.Sc in chemistry (1985) University of Athens; M.Sc in Chemical Oceanography (1988) University of Athens; PhD in Organic chemistry (1992) University of Athens) is a Research Director in the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).

His research interests are mainly focused on the chemistry of natural and anthropogenic organic compounds in marine coastal and open sea environments (origin, fate, bioaccumulation, biogeochemical cycles etc).

His research includes the study of organic pollutants, organic biomarkers, natural organic compounds, organic gases and the development of analytical techniques to determine trace organic compounds in the marine environment.

He is the head of Organic Chemistry Lab of the Institute of Oceanography since 2005. He has coordinated 16 National and European projects and actively involved in more than 90 projects and studies focusing on the marine pollution and the biogeochemical processes of the organic material in marine ecosystems.

He has published more than 200 scientific papers in journals, conference proceedings and technical reports, among which 54 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has participated/coordinated more than 50 oceanographic cruises and surveys in Mediterranean and Red Sea.
