Water quality<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Ballesteros work in watershed management spans both regulatory and academic aspects. From the regulatory standpoint, he was a member of the Technical Working Group (TWG) of the Consortium of Urban Subsurface Environment Management in Asia, an inter-agency research consortium currently chaired by the Philippine National Water Resources Regulatory Board. The TWG plans policy interventions pertaining to subsidence issues, water withdrawal and saltwater intrusion.<\/p>\n

A supplementary work on watershed protection is to correctly classify tributaries of the lake and apply needed remedies to properly manage water quality in these tributaries. He helped devise a Philippine specific Stream Visual Assessment Protocol that can be implemented by the communities living near these bodies of water. \u00a0The protocol can be used by anyone with minimal technical background.<\/p>\n

\n

Hazardous waste management<\/strong><\/p>\n

Designed remediation strategies for SVOC (slightly volatile organic compounds) contaminated soils and groundwater contamination arising from petroleum spills. Remediation strategies included both biological and physical\/chemical treatment methods.<\/p>\n

Prof. Ballesteros also worked provided cultancy work with the united Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the area of POPs Management. \u00a0This work consisted in assisting the Philippine Government and multilateral institutions craft programs for the management of persistent organic compounds (PBDE\/PFOS-POPSs) in electronic waste, plastics and foam industry including transboundary movement of these materials.<\/p>\n

\n

Climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n

His work experience in this area is mainly on adaptation which includes assisting vulnerable municipalities in mainstreaming planning and policy-making activities related to climate change by the local government planning agencies. Prof. Ballesteros\u2019 academic work in modeling expansion (both magnitude and direction) of urban areas enabled me to assist planners to work towards flood resilient cities through a proper balance of land use and land cover conversion. In addition, through modeled scenarios for particular policy directions, urban planners are able to anticipate environmental impacts including flooding, mudslides and other disasters and act accordingly by way of policy interventions. In addition, vulnerability assessments can be carried out thus enabling government planners make informed decisions. He also worked with foreign experts in this field through trainings in planning and policy work for low carbon development including conducting mock climate change negotiations in conference of parties. \u00a0This activity was undertaken under the auspices of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Policy of the University of Texas and the University of Hiroshima, Japan.<\/p>\n
