His thesis focused on advanced treatment methods for municipal wastewater, such as Ultrafiltration Membranes and Activated Carbon Filters. He continued with a Master in Science in 2007 on “Hydraulic Engineering and the Environment” at the Department of Civil Engineering, where he conducted his Master Thesis on wastewater treatment using pilot Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands. His Ph.D. (2011) focused on Ecological Engineering and Technology, where he investigated several pilot Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland units for wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering.

His expertise lies in water engineering and specifically on natural waste treatment systems. He is an expert on the sustainable and decentralized treatment systems, mainly Constructed Wetlands and wastewater ponds. His interests expand to the beneficial reuse applications of treated effluents and to the investigation of ecosystem services provided by wetland systems, following the new concept of circular economy and sustainable engineering. As an Environmental Engineer, he is designing, constructing and operating wastewater treatment facilities using Wetland Technology in many countries in Europe, Middle East, USA and Africa. Currently, Bauer Nimr LLC, a subsidiary of the German multinational company Bauer, employs him and he is based in Oman working on projects around the world.

He also is an active researcher and University lecturer. He has worked as Researcher at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece, at Helmholtz Institute for Environmental Research – UFZ in Germany, at the University of Beira Interior in Portugal and at the University of Brighton in the UK. He has been and is currently involved in more than 15 international research projects in various countries around the world (Greece, Portugal, Germany, Italy, UK, Oman, Iran, USA, Brazil and Venezuela). He holds a record of several publications in international scientific journals and conference proceedings, while he has also published two books and many book chapters. Moreover, he taught for several years at the undergraduate and postgraduate level at several Educational Institutes (e.g., Democritus University of Thrace, Greece and University of Brighton, UK) and is currently a visiting Lecturer at the German University of Technology in Oman. He has been awarded many times in his career for his work and receives several invitations to give speeches and lectures as an expert on Constructed Wetlands. He is reviewer in more than 50 international scientific journals and serves as scientific committee member in various international conferences.
He is known in the related international field as an enthusiast of the green technology of Constructed Wetlands, always trying to promote sustainability and environmental awareness in the waste management sector and to disseminate and transfer his knowledge to fellow colleagues and young engineers and students.

Click here to download the Abstract

“Stefanakis Alexandros“ Dr Stefanakis graduated from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece with the Diploma of Environmental Engineer in 2005.
