Karapanagioti was born in Patras, Greece. \u00a0She graduated from the Department of the Environment at the University of the Aegean in 1992. \u00a0In 1993, she moved to USA to pursue graduate studies in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma. \u00a0She received her Master of Environmental Science degree in 1995 and her Doctor of Philosophy in 2000. \u00a0She worked on environmental reclamation of soils and environmental remediation of groundwater. \u00a0In the meantime, she spent 8 months in the Geology Department at the University of Tuebingen, Germany in 1997-1998 and 1 month in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Waterloo, Canada studying field hydrogeology in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, Karapanagioti joined ICEHT, FORTH, Greece as a Post Doctoral Researcher in EU project GRACOS working on modeling pollution diffusion in the vadose zone. \u00a0In 2001-2008, she worked as Adjunct Lecturer Professor in the Marine Sciences Department at the University of the Aegean with specialty in Marine Geochemical processes.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2007, she has joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Patras, initially as a Lecturer Professor and currently, since January 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry with emphasis on liquid pollution (got her tenure in September 2016). \u00a0In 2012, she spent two months as a Visiting Professor in School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University, UK. \u00a0Since 2007, she also works as an Adjunct Professor in Waste Management Graduate Program at Hellenic Open University. \u00a0Since 2003, almost yearly she joins Expert Panels for reviewing research proposals for the EU 6th, 7th, and H2020 Framework Program European Commission, and since 2010, she works as Research Program Evaluator for the 7th Framework Program European Commission, EU, Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>She has published 57 papers in international scientific peered-reviewed journals (Web of Science). Her H-index is 17 and her work has received more than 800 citations. \u00a0She is in the editorial board of Journal of Contaminant Hydrology and Associate Editor of Marine Pollution (specialty section of Frontiers in Marine Science and Frontiers in Environmental Science). \u00a0She has organized several international symposia and was the Vice-President of IWA Regional Symposium on Water, Wastewater and Environment: Traditions and Culture, that took place on 22-24 March 2014, in Patras and the Co-convener of the EGU 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, Session &#8220;Novel sorbent materials for environmental remediation&#8221;, Vienna. \u00a0In 2013, she joined a team of 9 other researchers throughout the world and published in Nature a 3-page comment on environmental concerns related to plastic debris.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Associate Professor H.K.
