Short Biography

Professor Dr. Ioannis K. Kalavrouziotis with PhD in Environmental Geochemistry from Department of Geology, University of Patras, Greece (1999) is currently a Professor and Former President of Hellenic Open University, Member of the University’s Board of Directors (1 September 2016 to 18 October 2022) and is Director of Education on Wastewater Management Master Programme, and Honoray Doctorate, Aristotle University of Greece, School of Spatial Planning and Development, Faculty of Engineering (7 March, 2024). Visiting Fellow in the University of Derby, UK (2015-2018). Guest Professor of Hubei University, China (09 May, 2019- 2022). Dean of the School of Science and Technology, HOU (1 September 2026 to 19 October 2022),  He taught at the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Management, University of Western Greece (2000-2013). He has completed administrative responsibilities as: Agronomist of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture (1988-2000), Director of Western Greece Region Administration (1993), Member of the Administrative Board of the National Agricultural Research Foundation (2006-2009), President of the Sector for the Management of Messologion Lagoon (2006-2009). He is a member of IWA and President of IWA Symposium on ‘Water, Wastewater, and Environment: Traditions and Culture’, 2014, Patras, Greece, a Chairman of IWA Specialist Group on Water and Wastewater in Ancient Civilizations. President of the Regional Council for Research and Innovation of the Western Greece Region (2020-2024). He has published 6 Books and chapters, 130 peer-reviewed full research papers in International Journals, 81 papers in International Conferences, 38 papers in National Conferences and more than 120 articles in journals and newspapers.

Associate Professor Dr. Petros Kokkinos

Dr. Petros Kokkinos is Molecular Biologist and Associate Professor at the School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University (HOU). He has studied Biological Sciences at the University of Trieste, Italy, and holds a PhD from the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras, Greece.

He has received nine scholarships and has conducted research in UK, USA, Spain, and Switzerland. He is currently member of the Laboratory of Sustainable Waste Management Technologies and the Director of the Postgraduate Study Program ‘Cultivations under cover-Hydroponics’. He has participated in more than 17 research projects. He has published 58 peer reviewed scientific papers (h-index: 27, citations >2500, Google Scholar), 51 publications in international conferences, 29 publications in Greek conferences, two book chapters and a scientific book.

His research interests include Water Pollution, Biology of Wastewater Treatment, Wastewater Reuse, Environmental Virology, Risk Assessment and Public Health.

Prof. Xiao Yun. Zheng

Mr. Xiao Yun. Zheng (Zheng, Xiao Yun),is a full distinguished professor in School of History and Culture, president of China Institute of Yangtze River Studies, and president of Institute of Water History and Water Civilization, Hubei University, China. He is a historian, anthropologist and human hydrologist in the fields of the environment\water history and comparative studies of water history and culture internationally. He is past president of International Water History Association(2012-2015).Currently he is a scientific advisor of UNESCO’ s Global Water Museum Network, vice president of Chinese Water Museum Alliance, Vice chairman of IWA specialist group of water in ancient civilization.Member of France Academy of Water. He was awarded the Honorary PHD by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2017, Honorary Professor of Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts in 2009,etc. He has published 24 books and more than 300 papers in China and internationally. His current research interesting and teaching included river history and civilization compare studies, water history, diversity of water culture, hydrological heritage, etc.

Paraskevi Chalatsi is PhD candidate in School of Science and Technology of Hellenic Open University. She possesses a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Patras and has completed with honors her MSc in Chemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry and Nanotechnology. Her professional experience includes an internship at the chemistry laboratory of the “PATRΑIKI 1918” winery and lab assistant duties in the Analytical Chemistry I lab. She has contributed as associate researcher to an international postgraduate project focused on renewable energy and, more recently, has been involved in the “Biocom” research project aimed at enhancing soil fertility through the use of vermiculture and biochar, implemented as part of a pilot initiative co-funded by the European Union.

Dr. Ekavi Aikaterini Isari

Dr. Ekavi Isari is a Chemist and a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Sustainable Waste Management Technologies of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) in Patras, Greece. She holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Analysis from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Patras and a Ph.D. from the School of Science and Technology at HOU, specializing in Environmental Protection. Her research focuses on wastewater treatment, the remediation of aquatic systems, the detection of microplastics in agricultural soils, and the humification of wastewater. Dr. Isari is the author of nine (9) scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals and has presented more than fifteen (15) scientific papers at national and international conferences. She possesses extensive teaching experience across higher, secondary, and post-secondary education.

Eleni Grilla, MS, Ph.D

Dr. Eleni Grilla is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Sustainable Waste Management Technologies Laboratory with a PhD and MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Patras and a Diploma in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Crete. Her research focuses on the application of Advanced Oxidation Processes for the degradation of emerging pollutants (antibiotics, pharmaceutical compounds, endocrine disruptors) in aquatic systems. She has experience in catalyst characterization techniques (BET, SEM, TEM, XRD) and analytical techniques (HPLC, LC-MS/MS), which are used for the quantification of organic compounds. She has contributed to over 10 funded research projects focusing on waste management, with a particular emphasis on circular economy practices aimed at protecting the environment. Her published work includes 11 articles in international scientific journals, 10 publications in international and national scientific conferences (citation index: 195, h index: 6, Scopus, 16/06/2024). She has served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Agriculture of the University of Patras with the subject “Agricultural Residues and Waste Management” during the Spring Semester of the Academic Year 2023-2024 as well as at the Liaoning University of Technology with the subject “Physical Chemistry” during the Winter Semester of the Academic Year 2024-2025. In addition, her teaching work includes two specializations at the D.I.E.K. Patras, Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic & Related Products Technician and Applied Chemical & Microbiological Technologies Specialist.

Kolovou Myrto-Sofia, MSc

Myrto Sophia Kolovou is from Patras  and is a Computer and Information Technology Engineer from the University of Patras, Department of Computer and Information Technology Engineering, Polytechnic School of Patras (Greece, 2019) and holds an MSc in Data Science & Machine Learning. She has expertise in programming, application development and web technologies. She has experience in technical support, software development and participates in education projects, with knowledge of PHP, Python, JavaScript, Yii, MySQL and Moodle. She works at the Hellenic Open University as a Software Engineer and has participated in European digital education projects and activities.

Erofili-Vagia Gkogkou

Erofili-Vagia Gkogkou is a PhD candidate at the School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University, conducting research at the Laboratory of Sustainable Waste Management Technologies. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Master’s degree specializing in Analytical Chemistry and Nanotechnology from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Patras. Her research work focuses on waste management and environmental chemistry.

Mr. Charilaos Stefanou

Mr. Charilaos Stefanou is an Agronomist and a graduate of the Department of Agriculture, Ichthyology, and Aquatic Environment at the University of Thessaly, holding a degree with a GPA of 7.59/10. His undergraduate thesis was titled: “The Effect of Salinity on the Growth and Survival Rate of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) and Rock Samphire (Crithmum maritimum) in an Experimental Aquaponic System at Salinities of 8ppt, 14ppt, and 20ppt.” This work was presented at HYDROMEDIT 2021 – 4th International Congress on Applied Ichthyology, Oceanography & Aquatic Environment. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s Degree in “Covered Crops and Hydroponics” at the Hellenic Open University and he has also contributed as an associate researcher in ‘Biocom’, a research project aimed at enhancing soil fertility using vermiculture and biochar, implemented as part of a pilot initiative co-funded by the European Union. His research experience focuses on cutting-edge technologies in aeroponics, hydroponics, and aquaponics. He co-founded the start-up company Aeroponics Hellas P.C., headquartered at Patras Science Park, where he works as an Agronomist–Researcher, specializing in the design and implementation of innovative high-tech systems for greenhouses. He is also responsible for providing scientific support in the development and operation of Aeroponics, Hydroponics, and Aquaponics cultivation units. In addition, he has worked for Enaleia – a non-profit organization, where he was responsible for communications and coordination in projects addressing marine environmental pollution.
